Color Formulations


STAR Bleachtone is available in
Pure White.

Here are starting point color mixing formulations for:

Off White
&
Tan Bleachtone

For One gallon formulas some of the tint color additions are very small. Since you won't be using the same exact colors or dispersions as the factory formulas you may want to hold back a portion of the formula the first time you test with your colorants. The Tan color has a bright red and a phthalo green that should only be used to tint with if needed (and very sparingly). These formulations are close calculations based on a 1 gallon mix and are intended only as a starting point.
Lacquer specific colorants will give the best results.

Starting formula for:
Off White Bleachtone
STAR #11-5 Pure White Bleachtone.................................127 fl. oz.
Yellow Oxide.............................3/4 fl. oz.
Burnt Umber .............................1/4 fl. oz.
...........................................Total =128 fl. oz.

Starting formula for:
Tan Bleachtone
STAR #11-5 Pure White Bleachtone..................................116 fl oz.
Yellow Oxide.............................11-1/4 fl. oz.
Carbon Black..............................3/4 fl. oz.
If needed - Bright Red (lithol)...........tint
If needed - Phthalo Green ...............tint
...........................................Total =128 fl. oz.
Notes on Bleachtone Usage:

Do you want to do a lighter toned finish than the
wood color?
Were the wood planks were glued up with an objectionable color match?
A two part wood bleach is one answer; it's, messy and time consuming, to get the timber to a neutral
more even tone.

For large projects, cabinets and production, true
bleaching may be beyond budget or not logistically
feasible. For these situations BLEACHTONE
(a sprayable color mask) was developed to
'bleach with the spray gun'.

Bleachtone must be reduced with Bleachtone Reducer
(1 part Bleachtone to 1 part Bleachtone reducer)
to maintain its unique 'masking' qualities.

Spray apply only one light & even coat.
The object is NOT to produce an even color but to provide a uniforming color tone mask allowing the grain to show.

The resultant stain and finish will be more uniform
than without the Bleachtone "color mask".
To avoid overuse, it is helpful to some to think of
the Bleachtone as only 'buying the right color
of wood in the first place'.

The process should NOT necessarily be considered part the finishing schedule any more than using a two-step wood bleach or starting with the right timber color.
