Concentrate Dyes for Staining Bare Wood & Tinting Lacquer
or Water Based Finishes.

The above formula will yield a concentrated, very light fast, woodtone dye stain or tinting color. These suggested formulas are a starting point to develop your own woodtone stains for both Water dispersed & MEK dispersed metalized dye concentrates. Water dyes will yield a brighter result.
Do NOT expect the formulas to give the same or exact color matches in both
MEK and Water.
Wood color and specie will be an important factor in determining the final dye mix for each project.

To MAKE a WORKING SOLUTION:
After making a concentrated color, disperse the concentrate in 1 to 3 parts of appropriate solvent to come up with a working dye color. The concentrated or working strength dye may be introduced into sealers and topcoats to make a shading lacquer or finish.

The solvent based MEK dye concentrate may be mixed into Lacquer Thinner, Lacquer Retarder, or a blend of the two for application. A larger percentage of retarder will; help penetration, allow more working time, and help eliminate lap marks. The MEK may also be dispersed into Acetone. MEK dyes WILL NOT disperse into Mineral Sprits, Paint Thinner or other hydrocarbon solvents.

Pre-wetting a wood surface (just prior to dye application) with an even light application of the solvent used in the dye will help achieve even an color and uniform penetration into the fibers.

Toner to Make 'Water-White' Lacquer, AMBER:
Add to one gallon of Lacquer or Lacquer sanding Sealer:
34.3 grams of Yellow & 1.0 grams of Brown.
Adjust as needed. Amber toned lacquer is used in replicating old period and aged wood finishes. Amber toned lacquer will assist in blending color differences of wood or stain on mid and dark toned finishes. -
